1- WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
This year Women’s History Month will mark the contributions of Aboriginal women to Nova Scotia, their communities and their families. The Journey Forward is an opportunity to better understand the realities of Aboriginal women’s lives and the challenges they face.
This year also marks some significant anniversaries: the 25th anniversary of Canada's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the 10th anniversary of the release of the final report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, People to People, Nation to Nation.
Person’s Day in Canada is October 18. We celebrate the decision by the British High Court that women are persons under the law, which cleared the way for most women to vote in this country. Aboriginal women, however, were not eligible to vote until the Indian Act changed, in 1960.
The Advisory Council will mark Women’s History Month by co-sponsoring the Agnes Dennis Lecture with the Local Council of Women of Halifax. Viola Robinson is the key speaker, and filmmaker and drummer Cathy Martin will perform.
2- WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH LOCAL EVENTS
Mi’kmaq lawyer and leader Viola Robinson and filmmaker and drummer Cathy Martin are featured in the 2006 Agnes Dennis Lecture, hosted by the Advisory Council and the Local Council of Women of Halifax. The focus of the lecture is the contributions of aboriginal women to their families and communities and the rights of aboriginal women. It reflects the Women’s History Month theme Aboriginal Women, the Journey Forward.
